Handmade Shawls

The Egyptian craftsman throughout the Pharaonic, Roman, Byzantine, Coptic, and Islamic eras would spend days and nights operating his loom in order to fashion a small ornate piece, a wedding-dress, or shawl.

From the third century AD on, textiles still mainly of plain linen were often decorated with areas of tapestry weave combining linen with coloured threads, either of wool or, increasingly, silk. In the later Middle Ages, Egypt was still famous for its fine linen textiles. Later Egypt was famous with its cotton hand-woven textiles especially in small workshops in upper Egypt in Naqada, Esna and Akhmim.
